How to Wash a Graphic Hoodie So the Print Lasts

Most printed hoodies do not wear out. They get washed wrong. Heat, friction and the wrong detergent do more damage in a year than daily wear does in five. Learning how to wash a graphic hoodie properly takes a few minutes and adds years to the piece. These are the steps Sulta✦Studios uses to test our own prints and the ones we recommend to anyone who buys one.

Turn it inside out, every time

The print faces the drum, other garments and the agitator when it is on the outside. Inside out, the fleece side takes the friction and the graphic stays protected. This is the single most important step. It applies to screen prints, puff prints and embroidery.

Close any zips before washing. An open zipper scrapes against everything in the load. Our Needlework Zip Hoodie has an embroidered panel, and a closed zip is what keeps the stitching from snagging.

Cold water, gentle cycle

Wash at 30 degrees Celsius, or 86 Fahrenheit, on a gentle or delicate cycle. Hot water softens plastisol ink and loosens the bond to the cotton. Over several hot washes, the print cracks along the fold lines.

Use a short spin. A high-speed spin creases the print while it is wet and those creases set as it dries. If your machine has a 600 rpm option, use it.

Wash hoodies with similar weights. A 450 gsm fleece in a load of light tees drags them around and stretches their collars. It also rubs harder against the print.

Pick the right detergent and skip everything else

Use a mild liquid detergent without bleach or optical brighteners. Powder detergent does not always dissolve fully in cold water and leaves grit that scratches the print. Brighteners fade dark cotton over time.

No fabric softener. Softener leaves a coating that stops the fleece from wicking and dulls the print surface. If the hoodie feels stiff after washing, a cup of white vinegar in the rinse does the same job without the residue.

No stain remover directly on the graphic. Treat stains on the fabric from the back of the print.

Dry it flat or hang it, never on high heat

Heat is the enemy of a print. A hot tumble dry shrinks the cotton under the ink while the ink stays the same size. The result is a print that cracks and peels.

Best option: reshape the hoodie and lay it flat on a rack. Second option: hang it on a wide hanger, hood over the hook, out of direct sun. If you need the dryer, use the no-heat or air-fluff setting and take it out while slightly damp.

Never iron a print. If you must press the hoodie, turn it inside out and put a cloth between the iron and the fabric, on the lowest setting.

Special cases: puff print, embroidery and acid wash

Puff print is a raised plastisol that expands when cured. It is more fragile than a flat print. Wash it inside out, cold, and never put it near a dryer. Heat flattens the puff and it does not come back.

Embroidery is the toughest finish. The thread is stitched through the fleece and cannot peel. The risk is snagging, so close zips and wash in a mesh bag if the load has anything with hooks or metal.

Acid wash and other garment-washed fleece has already been through heavy processing. The color will continue to soften slightly over the first few washes. That is expected. Wash it alone or with darks the first two times, since some dye can release.

Storage and wear between washes

You do not need to wash a hoodie after every wear. Two to four wears between washes is normal unless it is dirty or sweaty. Air it out on a hanger overnight instead.

Fold hoodies rather than hanging them long term. Hanging a heavy fleece for months stretches the shoulders. Fold the print face inward so it is not rubbing against the shelf.

What to expect from a well-made print

A screen print on a heavyweight fleece should survive 50 or more washes with this routine and show only light softening. Embroidery lasts longer still. If a print cracks in the first five washes, it was cured wrong at the factory, not washed wrong at home. Everything in our hoodie collection is wash tested before it goes on sale.
