How to Style an Oversized Hoodie: 5 Outfits

An oversized hoodie is easy to buy and easy to get wrong. The fit does most of the work, but the rest of the outfit decides whether it reads as intentional or as something you slept in. This guide covers how to style an oversized hoodie with five outfits that hold up in daily wear, plus the proportion rules behind each one. Sulta✦Studios cuts every hoodie in a dropped-shoulder, boxy fit, so these notes come straight from how we build them.

Start with the right fit, not the biggest size

Oversized is a cut, not a size. A hoodie built for a boxy fit has a wider body, a shorter length and a shoulder seam that sits two to three inches down the arm. Buying three sizes up in a regular hoodie gives you long sleeves and a hem past your knuckles. That is a different look, and a harder one.

Check the sleeve. It should end at the base of your thumb, not cover your hand. Check the hem. It should land near the top of your hip bone. If the hem hits mid-thigh, size down.

Our Acid Wash Hoodie is a 450 gsm cotton fleece with a dropped shoulder and a ribbed hem that holds its shape. Take your normal size for the intended fit. Go one up only if you want it to layer over a knit.

Balance the volume with your bottom half

The basic rule is one wide piece per outfit, or two wide pieces with a clear break between them. A wide hoodie with a wide pant works when the hoodie hem sits above the waistband and the pants are cropped or stacked at the ankle. A wide hoodie with a slim pant is the safest ratio and reads clean from every angle.

Avoid a mid-width straight jean with a boxy hoodie. It is neither slim nor wide, so the outfit looks undecided.

Five oversized hoodie outfits that work

1. Hoodie, cargo, low sneaker. A black oversized hoodie over black cargo pants with a white low-top. Keep the cargo slightly tapered so the outfit narrows toward the shoe. This is the daily fit. Our pants collection has the cargos we built for it.

2. Hoodie under a jacket. Pull the hood out over the collar of a shell or work jacket. The jacket should be one size roomier than the hoodie or the hood will bunch. Straight jeans, boots.

3. Hoodie, shorts, high sock. For warm weather. A 5 to 7 inch inseam short, a crew sock pulled up and a chunky sneaker. The hoodie carries the outfit, so keep the short plain.

4. Hoodie over a longline tee. Let two inches of tee show under the hoodie hem. This adds a layer line and lengthens the torso. Works with wide pants because the tee breaks the two volumes apart.

5. Hoodie tucked in front. A half tuck into a high-rise pant shows the waistband and sharpens the silhouette. Only do this with a hoodie that is not too thick at the hem. A 450 gsm fleece tucks fine. A double-layer hood or a heavy kangaroo pocket does not.

Mistakes that make an oversized hoodie look sloppy

Sleeves past the knuckles. A hem that covers the pockets of your pants. A hoodie so wide that the drop shoulder lands at the elbow. All three come from buying a regular hoodie in a size that is too large instead of a hoodie cut to be oversized.

The other common mistake is a thin fabric. A lightweight fleece in a wide cut collapses against the body and shows every fold. A 400 gsm or heavier fleece has enough weight to hang in a straight line from the shoulder, which is what makes the shape look deliberate.

Last, watch the neckline. A stretched-out collar undoes everything else. Look for a ribbed collar at least an inch deep, and wash the hoodie inside out on cold to keep it.

Color and print rules

A washed or faded hoodie already has texture, so pair it with flat colors. Acid wash black goes with solid black, grey or olive. A printed hoodie with a large back graphic should sit with a plain pant and a plain shoe. Two prints in one outfit compete unless they share a color.

Tonal outfits are the easiest win. Black hoodie, black pant, black shoe, one white detail like a sock or a cap.

Small details that finish the look

Push the sleeves up once to show the wrist. Wear the hood down unless it is raining. Keep the drawcords even and short, or remove them. A beanie or a cap fills the space around a wide neckline. Browse the full hoodies and sweatshirts range to find the weight and wash that suits your rotation.
