Heavyweight T-Shirt Guide: GSM, Cotton and Fit

A heavyweight t-shirt costs more than a basic tee and lasts several times longer. The difference is measurable. It comes down to fabric weight, yarn type, knit structure and how the shirt is finished. This guide explains the numbers so you can read a product page and know what you are getting. Sulta✦Studios builds every tee on a 240 gsm base, and the reasons for that number are below.

What GSM means and where the ranges sit

GSM is grams per square meter. It measures the weight of the fabric, not the shirt. A higher number means more yarn packed into the same area, which gives a thicker, denser cloth.

Rough ranges: 140 to 160 gsm is a lightweight promotional tee. 180 to 200 gsm is a standard retail tee. 220 to 260 gsm is heavyweight. Above 280 gsm you are in sweatshirt territory and the shirt stops breathing well in summer.

Our tees sit at 240 gsm. That is heavy enough to hold a boxy shape and hide the body underneath, but still wearable in July. The Enjoy The Ride Tee is a good reference point if you want to feel the weight in hand.

Cotton type matters as much as weight

Two shirts can both be 240 gsm and feel completely different. The yarn decides that. Ring-spun cotton is twisted and thinned into a smoother, stronger thread. Open-end cotton is cheaper and fuzzier, and it pills faster.

Combed cotton has the short fibers removed before spinning, so the surface is smoother and holds print better. Combed ring-spun is the standard for a tee you expect to keep for years.

Fiber length matters too. Longer staple cotton makes a stronger yarn. You will not always see this listed, but a shirt that feels soft without feeling thin is usually built from it.

Why heavyweight tees last longer

A thin tee fails in three places. The collar stretches, the seams twist and the fabric goes sheer at the shoulders. A heavyweight tee resists all three.

The collar on a proper heavyweight tee is a thick ribbed band, often 2 by 2 rib, sewn with a wide binding. It snaps back after washing instead of bagging out. Side seams or a tubular body keep the shirt from twisting. And 240 gsm of dense cotton does not go see-through after fifty washes.

Print holds better too. Ink sits on a flatter, denser surface, so it cracks less. Every graphic tee in our t-shirt collection is printed on the same 240 gsm base for that reason.

Knit structure and finish

Most tees are a single jersey knit. On a heavyweight tee the jersey is knitted tighter, so the fabric is more opaque and less prone to twisting after a wash. Some brands use a tubular knit with no side seams. It saves sewing but the shirt can rotate on the body over time. Side-seamed tees hold their shape better, and every tee we make has side seams for that reason.

Finish matters as well. A garment-dyed tee has been dyed after sewing, which gives a slightly faded, softer look and removes most of the shrinkage before you buy. An enzyme wash softens the surface. A silicone wash adds a smooth hand feel. None of these change the weight, but they change how the tee feels on the first wear.

Shrinkage and how to manage it

Cotton shrinks. A heavyweight tee that has not been pre-shrunk can lose up to five percent in length on the first hot wash. Look for the words pre-shrunk or garment washed on the product page. If it is not listed, wash cold and hang dry the first time and expect one to two percent.

Our tees are garment washed before they ship, so what you receive is the size you keep. Wash inside out at 30 degrees Celsius, tumble low or hang. Skip the high-heat dryer. It is the fastest way to shrink any cotton.

How a heavyweight tee should fit

Heavy fabric wants room. A boxy cut with a dropped shoulder lets the cloth hang straight instead of clinging. Sleeves should end mid-bicep, the hem should sit at the hip and the body should have three to four inches of ease at the chest.

A slim heavyweight tee fights itself. The fabric pulls across the chest and the seams show strain. If you like a closer fit, go with a lighter 200 gsm shirt instead.
